Athletics and Activities at CIS
A warm welcome from the new Activities Office at Canadian International School!
We look forward to some exciting opportunities for our CIS students this academic year, but we’ll also see significant changes made. This blog will give you a snapshot of this academic year for CIS Athletics and Activities.
Bangalore Activities and Athletics School Conference (BAASC)
CIS, one of the top international schools in Bangalore, will be one of the school’s spearheading an inter-school conference among several international schools in Bangalore. This is a new endeavour and school administrators are working hard to ensure that competitions will take place throughout this academic year, particularly for our three core sports – soccer, basketball, and swimming.
With the creation of BAASC comes our biggest change this academic year: seasonal sports. Our sports teams will no longer be practising throughout the entire year, but only during pre-determined seasons. Seasons last anywhere between 7-10 weeks, with some exceptions being made for teams participating in FOBISIA competitions. CIS is a member of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) is a registered Society in Singapore. It is a not-for-profit membership organisation in the international education sector
We will also be creating teams based on schools (i.e. Elementary, Middle, and High School). BAASC competitions will cater for Grades 2 to 12. For those with children below Grade 2, don’t worry! Our Athletics School Conference (ASA) program will offer a variety of sport and non-sport activities.
Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA)
CIS joined FOBISIA last academic year and has already been quite active. Our swim team travelled to Bangkok in January 2019 and performed well. We hope to continue participation in that competition while exploring more options for our student-athletes to participate. These events are an invaluable investment for the development of the child and an experience they will never forget.
With the creation of BAASC, CIS now has the opportunity to begin the process of joining a core division of FOBISIA. Being part of a core division means that the school can attend the annual games – an event in which four school teams travel to one location to participate in soccer, basketball, swimming, and track and field events over the span of 4-5 days against five other international schools.
While this process may take 2-3 years and greatly depends on the FOBISIA Sports Executive Committee, CIS is considered “on-call” and will look to officially join a core division in the near future.
Wait, there’s more!
You’ll also see some of our wonderful teachers serve as coaches on select sports teams throughout the year. CIS plans to begin utilizing these teachers’ talents beyond the classroom, as several have a vast amount of coaching experience.
We hope to soon vote and roll out a new CIS mascot. I believe this will develop greater athletic spirit throughout the school.
And lastly, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. I am situated next to the PE office and my email address is listed below.
We greatly look forward to another successful year at CIS!
