Explore Professional Development Opportunities at CIS

In education, the relationship built between students and teachers is the most important factor in student learning. For teachers and schools to be as effective as possible, it is imperative for teachers to be learners themselves and continue to develop strategies and understand best developmental practices to create the most challenging environments for students to grow. Teachers who routinely develop their knowledge and skills are great role models for students to show that learning is important and an ongoing process. At Canadian International School (CIS), one of the top schools in Bangalore, we make Professional Development (PD) days an integral part of our teaching and learning process to support teacher learning, growth, and adaptation to new learning techniques. We know that for our students to learn, our teachers need to be learners as well!

As a truly international educational institution, we hold 15 of PD days each year with a primary focus on students and student learning. These include a focus on formative assessment, feedback, collaborative practices, questioning strategies, the inclusion of technology in learning, differentiation, and supporting individual learners. Our teacher supervision model starts with teacher goal setting that focuses on what is best for student learning and a support system of teacher peers and supervisors to help each teacher be successful in achieving her or his learning goals. As a result, CIS faculty are more focused on students and student learning and the teaching processes that are most effective to reach classroom goals.

The effectiveness of PD at CIS depends on the careful conception, preparation, and implementation of the programs. This means including teachers in decision making about what is most needed to make their classroom as effective as possible. Together with school leaders, teachers shape was is needed based on what our students need at each developmental level throughout the school. By differentiating our approach to professional development, we help teachers differentiate their classrooms for all the unique learners in their rooms. Our approach to professional development has been affirmed when school leaders and teachers see the evidence of growth among our students and what they are able to achieve in our assessments and performance tasks.

Of course, teaching and learning are about giving back too! As India’s 1st Apple Distinguished School, CIS is an active promoter for the use of technology in the classroom to aid learning. Teachers frequently lead and participate in workshops in and outside the school campus to learn and adapt to teaching with technology. TechConX, the annual technology conference held at CIS is one of the biggest PD days at school. Open to educators from across Asia, it is a conference dedicated to exploring and discussing ideas on integrating technology into the classroom. TechConX includes classroom visits, presentations, workshops, and hands-on sessions led by many experienced educators, along with those led by Apple Distinguished Educators in this 2-day conference.

Canadian International School (CIS) prides in being not just one of the finest institutions for students, but a laboratory of learning for teachers too. With a rich history of 22 years, we have been facilitating a truly international education for students and teachers alike on a world-class campus.
