The Integral Role of Athletics in Education at CIS

Many parents are concerned with the decline in the number of athletic programs offered by schools in India. Exposing children to physical activity at an early age greatly benefits their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. Studies also show that children participating in athletics from a young age are more likely to have a passion for physical activity throughout life.

Athletics plays a huge role at Canadian International School (CIS), one of the top schools in Bangalore. We know that sports offer our students a unique bonding experience that builds teamwork, friendships, spirit, confidence, and character. Here are some facts about the integral role athletics plays in education:

  • Social skills: Athletics at CIS not only provides a social circle for students but also provides the opportunity to make friends.
  • Focus: Students involved in sports are required to concentrate and execute strategies in order to win or do well.
  • Healthy lifestyle: Participation in athletics also helped students decrease the likelihood of heart disease and diabetes.
  • Discipline: Sports, because of the vivid and often immediate rewards of pushing hard, teach the value of discipline.
  • Mental Health: Athletics reduces the levels of stress hormones and stimulates the production of endorphins which make students feel more relaxed and optimistic after a competition.
  • Teamwork: Students learn valuable skills from athletics and getting along with a team is crucial in achieving results.
  • Motor skills: The development of motor skills in young children is directly correlated to physical activity. Studies show that 80% of students reported improvements in motor performance through continued physical activity.

Here are the athletic programs offered at CIS:

  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Swimming

Apart from these programs, CIS also conducts the Annual Inter-School Golf Tournament and the Terry Fox Run to encourage students to participate in sports. We have also partnered with several leading academies to provide extra training sessions for students from Tuesday to Thursday, from 4 pm to 5 pm.

  • Paris Saint Germain Academy (soccer and swimming)
  • Rohan Bopanna Tennis Academy
  • Michael Phelps Swimming Academy
  • Indian Shorin Ryu (karate)
  • BYFL (cricket)

CIS also has several school teams, for the elementary, middle school, and high school sections that encourage participation in sports. Active participation in sports instils a number of positive character traits that will stay with students throughout life.

Canadian International School (CIS) has many firsts to its name – the 1st school in Bangalore to offer the IB Diploma Programme, 1st school in South India to offer 1:1 iPad integrated learning and teaching, 1st school in India to be 100% solar powered, and India’s 1st Apple Distinguished School.
