The Terry Fox Run: What Your Participation Means for Cancer Awareness?

“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Terry Fox Started in 1980 by Terry Fox, the Terry Fox Run also known as the Marathon of Hope has helped raise awareness and nearly $715 million for cancer research. Today, the run has become synonymous with finding a ray of hope and passing it on, and 37 years on, the tradition still runs strong.

Cancer is a disease that affects us all, making it important for us to band together and pledge our support to the Terry Fox Run – a non-competitive family event to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research awareness.

What do we know about cancer today?

  • It was estimated that in 2017, nearly 13% of all cancers diagnosed in adults ages 20 and older would be rare cancers.
  • Current cancer incidence rate (averaged over 2009-2013) is about 20% higher in men than women.
  • Breast cancer incidence rates in females have been increasing very slightly over the last 10 years of available data (2004-2013), with the trend entirely driven by increasing rates among women of color.
  • Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among males (27%).
  • Since 1975, cancer incidence rates have been increasing slightly by about 0.6% per year among children and adolescents.

Your participation can change the statistics as we know it.

In Bangalore, the Terry Fox Foundation’s annual “Terry Fox Run” is based out of the Canadian International School (CIS) Bangalore Campus, which serves as the start and finish for the 5K run.

Hosted by CIS for the 6th year running, the event is open to students, teachers, and parents from schools across Bangalore, as well as other guests. Participants are welcome to walk, jog, bike or run at their own pace.

Let Terry’s courage and determination inspire you to put on your running shoes and see the last mile through. Pledge your support today and make CIS’ Terry Fox Run a true Run of Hope.
