Virtual Terry Fox Run
The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive marathon held across the world in tribute to Terry Fox, a late Canadian cancer research activist who desired to find a cure for cancer. ”I want to try the impossible and show it can be done”, he said as he started a Marathon of Hope to raise money for this cause. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his illness in June 1981, although having left an inspiring legacy that lives on until today. Canadian International School, Bangalore, (CIS) conducts the Terry Fox Run annually to raise funds for cancer research in India, striving to achieve Terry’s goal of finding a cure to this unrelenting disease.
We all believe in giving back to the world, and this is one of those opportunities where your participation can change the lives of people. A chance to be the ray of hope to many struggling in the battle of life. In a situation like this, during the pandemic we’ve all realised the value of our ‘normal’ daily lives and this is the perfect opportunity to take a step towards gifting ‘normal’ lives to many people in the world.
As students of the IB programme we took this up as our own personal CAS program goals to spread the word and to help make a difference in our own way. Service is a major component of our IB CAS journey and we are learning through opportunities like these to give back to society. This enhances our high school experience and gives us the exposure which makes us grow as people. We hope that this initiative reaches people and helps us as students make a difference in the world.
You can do help our initiative and join in Terry’s cause by participating in CIS’ Terry Fox Run for cancer research this year. The run will be held virtually on October 10, 2020 and participants can complete the run in their neighborhoods or even in their own homes if they don’t want to step out. The students and community of Canadian International School have not let the lockdown be a hindrance to this event; rather, we have seen it as an obstacle to overcome.
Date of the run: Saturday, October 10th 2020.
The Terry Fox Week starts on October 5th, and we have many fun challenges for participants during that week. Participants can walk, run, bike, or skate at their own pace and venue – outdoors or in the comfort of their own home. The means of transport are endless – as long as you are utilizing your body in the process. This year is the 40th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Follow our posts for exciting information related to celebrating the 40 years of the Terry Fox Run.
Your participation is important to us and one small step in achieving our goal of raising funds for cancer research. Do not partake in this event just for the sake of it; rather, think about all the people suffering from cancer of various stages – whether you may know them personally or not – whom you will benefit.
Terry once said “I believe in miracles. I have to.”, millions of people out in the world today are managing to survive everyday by hanging onto those very miracles and that ray of hope. Now is the chance for us to be a part of their miracle.
